Cardiovascular MRI Training Today

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is becoming increasingly important for cardiovascular diagnostics. Many MRI scanners are upgraded for cardiac imaging with new systems optimised for cardiac diagnostics being installed worldwide.
However, there are only few institutions offering adequate clinical experience and meeting the acknowledged criteria for training centres. (J Cardiovasc Magn Res , 2(3), 233-234, 2000; Z Kardiol 90; 442-444, 2001) .

Our course contents have been structured in accordance with presently acknowledged training principles. Our cardiac MRI training is conducted in several levels by both radiologists and cardiologists.
Training contents closely follow the guidelines of and are certified by the German Society for Radiology, the recommendations of the German Cardiac Society and the Guidelines of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

Training Levels

(Credentialing Guidelines, SCMR; DGK Recommendations)

Level 1

(not authorised to carry out independent Cardio MRI examinations)

1 month cardio MRI fellowship

Level 2

General: Full qualification in cardiology, radiology or nuclear medicine

In particular:

Minimum of 3 months full time cardio MRI fellowship

Minimum of 50 hrs of theoretical training

Minimum of 150 cardiovascular MRI examinations (including 50 independent evaluations)

Participation in CME courses (minimum of 20hrs/2 years)

Continuous independent interpretation of at least 100 examinations per year

Level 3

In addition to Level 2:

1 year full-time continuing cardio MRI training

Supervised interpretation of at least 300 examinations

Participation in CME courses (minimum of 40hrs/2 years)

Continuous independent interpretation of at least 100 examinations per year

Our courses therefore provide the basics for fulfilling these requirements.
